Welcome to Marie Claire’s second annual Women in Sports Issue—a wide-sweeping look at the prodigies, industry vets, and community leaders who are on the forefront of creating change for females in what is traditionally a very male-dominated space. For the uninitiated, you may recognize cover star Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce from the viral video where she absolutely crushed the other parents in a race at her son’s school. For the sports fans, you know her as the Jamaican born and bred Olympic medalist and world track champion who has been the one to catch for nearly two decades. But what strikes me most about Fraser-Pryce is that she’s not just an athlete, but a shining example for others. “I’m here to inspire someone who may not find success until they’re in their thirties,” she says in our cover interview. “Now they have a blueprint, because I did it first.” After withdrawing unexpectedly from the Paris Olympics in 2024 speculation as to what really happened ran rampant. Writer and Hurdle podcast host Emily Abbate flew to Jamaica to meet with Fraser-Pryce to get the full story.
