C Gamer is full of folk who love the nail-biting thrill of action-RPGs, so you can bet that Black Myth: Wukong is high on our list of most-anticipated releases. We're not the only ones, either: it's currently Steam's most wishlisted game
Engage in an endless epic boss gauntlet, study your foes and emerge victorious in Steam's most hotly anticipated game.
If you're not familiar, let us give you a rundown on exactly what the game is all about. Developed by Game Science, Black Myth: Wukong is inspired by Journey to the West, penned in the 16th century and one of China's four classic novels. Both the game and its source material are heavily rooted in Chinese mythology, with players taking on the role of staff-wielding monkey the Destined One.
Black Myth: Wukong is all-in on the action-RPG combat, perfect for soulslike fans or those interested in the genre. That'll be put to use with the numerous Yaoguai the Destined One will encounter—strange and intelligent creatures that come in all shapes and sizes. Terrifyingly large spiders, muscular rock-form foes and giant humanoid wolves will be just some of the monsters waiting to be slain. It's set to be a veritable gauntlet of ultra-powerful enemies, each one bringing something unique to the table.
which is a pretty huge achievement. Well, after four years of anticipation, it's finally time to take the game off your wishlist and pop it straight into your library as Black Myth: Wukong launches today.
It won't be easy to take them down: Game Science's philosophy translates to "Gods competing amongst each other to demonstrate their unique individual talents," which sounds pretty darn powerful. That means experimenting with Black Myth: Wukong's intricate combo system and ability synergy will be key to securing victory against these formidable beings.
Combos are an integral part of Black Myth: Wukong's combat: Play around with stringing light attacks into hard-hitting heavy smackdowns. Try getting up close and personal to shave off a Yaoguai's health and then unleash a deadly heavy attack. Spells and skills are taken straight from Chinese mythology, giving you a diverse selection to choose from. It doesn't all have to be dodging and dying in Black Myth: Wukong, as these spells will let you be more proactive in your offense.
If that wasn't enough ways for you to get stuck into its combat, you can even shapeshift into a deadly new form when things are starting to look a little hairy. The Destined One can transform into many of the monsters encountered along the story, temporarily granting you their abilities to slot into your repertoire.
You can even strategise before the fight by freely customising all of these abilities, spells and equipment in order to give you the best chance of success. There's no heavy respec costs attached to this, and Black Myth: Wukong encourages you to try different combinations that'll strike right into the heart of your enemy's weakness. As you journey through the game as the Destined One, use these tools to their fullest and master the art of combat.
Awaken the Wukong force
Unravel the mysteries of the east
Even once you've emerged victorious, the story between you and your fallen rival is not over. Black Myth: Wukong's story goes beyond your journey as the Destined One. You'll be able to learn about the Yaoguai you're facing—their history, their motives and what continues to drive them. Delving deeper into the origins of your adversaries will give some great insight into the wider narrative picture, and may help explain just what they've been fighting for.
Black Myth: Wukong is sure to be the perfect addition to the libraries of anyone who's been spending this year slashing and dodge-rolling their way through a myriad of action-RPGs. Even if you're traditionally not a fan (or not very good) at tackling the genre's more difficult combat, this may very well be the game to change your mind. By his own admission, our staff writer Morgan Park "represents the everyman's experience" with action-RPGs. But after a couple hours with Black Myth: Wukong at Summer Game Fest earlier this year, he wrote that it was "way more [his] speed" than similar games he'd played.
